At the beginning, you might be tempted to say yes to anyone who wants to work with you. But we’d like to caution you away from that thinking. Yes, money is good, but not at the cost of your energy, and, let’s be real, your sanity. Finding clients who are a good fit ensures that you will be more on the same page when it comes to your process, your skills, and their budget.

It seems so simple, right? But when potential clients can go on your website and actually SEE what you do for others, it’s much easier for them to understand how you can help them. If you’re a designer, it’s key here to show projects that you want to book more of.

For example, if you recently wrapped up a project for a law firm and didn’t jive with the experience or industry, don’t show law firm projects in your portfolio! If you’re someone who wants to focus on booking more packaging projects - show those and scrap the website project you did and hated every minute of it.

If you don’t feel confident in the projects you have to show in order to attract more of the same, then make a project up. You can put a disclaimer on the case study or portfolio page saying it’s a theoretical project! That’s fine! But showing clients SOMETHING that’s come from your skilled brain is better than showing nothing.
